Will Tiger Return to Peak Form

May 4, 2010 - Steve Anderson

As a golf professional I'm asked almost on a daily basis if I think Tiger Woods will ever again dominated the game as he has for the past 10 years.  His play at the Masters and this past week clearly showed he's not at his best and has a long way to go to return to top form.

I've always told my students and my teacher's always told me that for every month away from the game that it'll take 2 months to get back to where you left off.  If this theory holds true then Tiger, who took 5 months off, will take nearly a year to regain his 'A' game.  I would be surprised if he wins this year but would sure look for him at next years Masters.  At the top level, golf is very much a mental game and for 12 years no golfer (or any other athlete in my opinion) had a stronger mental approach to the game.  As they used to say with Jack Nicklaus, on the first tee Jack knew he was better than you, you knew Jack was better than you, and Jack knew that you knew he was better than you.  He had already bet you before even teeing off and Tiger even more so.  With all the goings on in his life it's going to take a long period of time before he gets back in the game mentally.  If he's thinking about a personal issue he's not 100% thiking about his game and you can't win if this is happening.  His swing mechanics will take some time but his mental side will be the issue and until his life is settled one way or another, he's got some work to do.
