Toes Wiggle at Address

Golf is different than most sports in the balance of your body during your 'ready' position.  In baseball, football, tennis and most sports we're told to have your weight on the balls of your feet or on your toes.  This puts you in the 'athletic' position that readies your body to move quickly to go get the ball.  Golf is different in that we don't want to move or run after the ball we want to stay firm and anchored.  Well, if having your weight toward your toes help you to move then having it toward your heels slightly helps you to stay anchored.  Have about 60 % of your weight toward your heels.  Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson used to say to wiggle your toes at address and I teach my students the same thing.  At your address position, inside your shoes, you should be able to wiggle your toes slightly.  This will keep just enough weight toward your heels.  From this position you'll be able to drive your lower body forward during your downswing and end up on your back toe when you're done.  It's kind of hard to drive up onto your toe if you're already on your toe to begin with.  Staying back toward your heels will also give you better balance which will keep you from leaning over the ball during your swing which could cause the dreaded shank.

So, wiggle those toes and watch your swing and balance improve in no time at all.
