Remarkable Student from the Yukon

February 3, 2011 - Steve Anderson
A few weeks ago I had a student that was one of the most remarkable I've ever had in my 30 year career. He's a lefty like myself and had bought my book about 3 years ago. He lives in the Yukon, the western most and northen most part of Canada over by Alaska. His one way plane trip was nearly 5,000 miles so a long way to come for lessons to be sure. The day he left home it was 42 degrees below zero. When he landed here in Ft. Myers it was 73 so only a 115 degree difference. Imagine that. He took 3 hours of lessons with me everyday monday through friday that week so really had a comprehensive program.

What make his story remarkable is that almost 2 years ago he went to bed one night and when he woke up the next he was totally paralyzed, from the neck down. Couldn't move at all. No falls, no accidents just book. How scary. He was airlifted to a hospital and for many weeks the doctors had no idea why this happened and didn't know if it was temporary or he'd be like this forever. Finally some specialist discovered that some swelling at the top of his back was putting pressure on his spinal cord. Finally after 3 months it just sort of 'went away' and after some therapy and time in a wheelchair he was fine. Incredible and scary for sure.

His trip here was a gift from his loving wife to say congrats to him and he and I hit it off in like 2 seconds. He met my children and wife and they now call him Uncle Steve.

He plans to return most every year and bring his family next time. He certainly learned to live to enjoy every day and he was an inspiration to everyone who met him.
