We 'elect' FD commissioners to represent the public. To get elected the first thing our 'representatives' do is seek endorsements from the unions. This makes political sense but screws the public.
We pay FD commissioners a salary. The first thing they do when an issue arises is hire an outside firm to do the jobs we elected them to do. Why do we have to have FD commissioners? Is it just to give a lackey a job? A family member a job? A minority a job? Why do we have them?

just like everywhere I guess- not everyone you hire does a good job - there certainly is no need for this consultant if the commissioners could do the job - get people interested in attending the public meetings and make informed decisions when it comes time to "hire" the people to operate our local government departments
Butcher47; For the most part I feel you are correct but I disagree with "if the commissioners COULD do the job". It is not whether they CAN do the job as much as what thieving opportunities open-up when they "farm out" their duties. No one can be held responsible for their actions when 'outsiders' are the ones who can be blamed instead of those we elected to office.
They are going to blow our money and get what they want whether we, as a community, can afford it or not.
I have been to their meetings and have witnessed them sitting at their table with the microphones turned off and mumbling amongst themselves. You cannot get one of the cowards to directly answer a question without approval from their bottom-feeding 'counsel'. Why is this so?
keithkaye - it is too bad that outside influence has so much weight - it is really a shame that the commissioners have to look to the outside for leaders when the department has so many qualified (maybe not to the consultants belief) individuals within the department that truly have the capability and commitment that is needed to guide the dept. forward
