Deputies with the Lee County Sheriff's Office responded to 923 Sunrise Boulevard, Lehigh Acres on Friday, Feb. 19 shortly after 9 a.m., in reference to a possible theft in progress. When investigators arrived on scene they learned the complainant had encountered a suspicious man in a brown truck tampering with the air conditioning unit at a vacant home across the street. When the man drove away, the complainant copied his license plate number and contacted authorities, according to Sheriff's spokesman John Sheehan. Deputies inspected the AC unit and saw it had been dismantled and was missing parts. They checked the license plate number of the brown truck and responded to 700 W Cleveland Lane, Lehigh Acres to meet with the vehicle's owner, Sheehan said. The owner said her husband, Dwight Smith, 51, was the person using the truck. Detectives then responded to Allied Recycling where they learned Smith had received $45.36 earlier that morning for a transaction involving 36 pounds of aluminum air conditioning coil, Sheehan said. A short time later, Smith was located and taken into custody. He has been charged with one count of grand theft and one count of dealing in stolen property. |
