A 27-year-old Lehigh Acres man was killed shortly after 2 a.m. in an automobile crash today, Dec. 24. According to a police report from the Florida Highway Patrol, John C. Barber, a passenger in a car driven by an unidentified driver, died of injuries from the crash. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene.
Cpl. Linda Powell, who investigated the accident said the 1994 Nissan Altima vehicle he was a passenger in was traveling south on Kimberly Terrace in Fort Myers, just off Winkler Road, and was approaching a left turning curve at Villmoor Lane. The vehicle was exceeding the posted speed limit and traveled on the west shoulder of the road and struck a large palm tree and rotate clockwise.
She said the vehicle struck another palm tree which caused it to split into two pieces. The vehicle rotated counterclockwise and the front of the vehicle came to a final rest on the west shoulder.
The rear of the vehicle came to a final rest on Kimberly Terrace.
She said the rear seat passenger was ejected from the vehicle and came to final rest deceased on Kimberly Terrace.
According to the report, the driver and the right front passenger fled the scene; however, the passenger was located and brought back to the crash scene and identified as Norman Tong, 33, who was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital with minor injuries.
According to the report, the crash was alcohol related and the driver was not wearing seat belts. Also, seat belts were not in use by the passenger who was killed in the crash.
Police are continuing the investigation in an attempt to find and identify the driver of the vehicle.
