FGCU Art Gallery Opens 'Shidai Jingshen: The Spirit of the Epoch of the Chinese Avant-Garde' on Feb. 17

The Art Gallery at Florida Gulf Coast University opens "Shidai Jingshen: The Spirit of the Epoch of the Chinese Avant-Garde" with an opening reception with the artists from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 17 in the FGCU Arts Complex, art gallery.

Curator for the show and FGCU assistant professor of art Megan McShane delivers a Gallery Talk at 4 p.m. The exhibit runs through March 17.

The artists will hold a special session at the FGCU Naples Center, 1010 Fifth Ave. South, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Monday, Feb. 21. There will also be a book signing of Xiao Lu's poignant memoir, "Dialogue," recently published by Hong Kong University Press. To register call (239) 434-4737.

The show features the work of five young artists who explore issues of social concern in contemporary China and elsewhere around the world. Among the topics they tackle are access to education, cultural difference and how to bridge them, gay rights and other dilemmas of modern living.

The artists whose works will be exhibited include Gao Shiqiang, Guan Huaibin, Huang Xiaopeng, Xiao Lu and Zheng Bo.

Three of the artists Gao Shiqiang, Guan Huaibin and Xiao Lu will attend the opening reception and will serve as artists-in-residence at FGCU for 10 days, lecturing and working with the community.

All of the artists have gained reputations for their inter-media work and their ties to important art academies in China.

The Art Gallery is located inside the Arts Complex on FGCU's main campus. The University is located off Ben Hill Griffin Parkway, east of I-75 between exits 123 and 128. Parking is available in Lot 7 for gallery visitors; parking passes are available at the parking kiosk located at the University's entrance.
