Administrators, faculty, staff, family, friends and community sponsors watched as 330 eighth graders from Lehigh Acres Middle School walked across the stage at East Lee County High School May 24 to receive numerous district, school, and sponsored community awards and certificates for the 2010-2011 school year.
In addition to student awards the school received recognition for becoming the first and only certified Avid Program in the Lee County Middle Schools with more than 300 students participating in the program.
Curriculum received recognition for having all eighth grade gifted and Avid students take the PSAT. The PSAT is the preliminary to the SAT or Scholastic Aptitude Test used by most colleges and universities for admission to their schools.
Curriculum course offerings increased in all subjects with the highlight being the addition of High School Algebra I classes. Three years ago there was one class offering and this past year the number of course offerings in Algebra I increased to five and each class was full.
FCAT Writes scores saw an incredible jump in student scores. Lehigh Acres Middle School had almost a 20 percent increase in the number of students scoring a 4.0 or higher. In addition there was a 31 percent increase in the number of students scoring a 5.0 or higher, and the school as a whole went from 67 percent to 85 percent in the number of students who passed FCAT Writes. This is the highest ever for an eighth grade class at Lehigh Acres Middle School.
Last year Lehigh Acres Middle School had 10 students with a GPA between 3.75 and 3.99 based on a 4.0 Scale and this year there are 23.
This year also saw Eileen Cherbini and Mirta Medina-Pardo recognized by the Lee County School Board as the Middle School Guidance Counselor and Middle School Foreign Language Teacher of the year respectively.
