It appears that a democracy has taken over in the U.S.

To the Editor:

Independence Day, 2011, marked the 235th year since the signing of the Declaration of Independence by 56 men who were so concerned about the future of what had become their homeland.

The Constitution was adopted in 1787 and signed by 39 delegates. Remember the Preamble to the Constitution: “We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, o ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."

As the saying goes, a lot of water has gone over the dam since then.

These men would be appalled at the way our nation is today with the rampant use of drugs, cohabitation lifestyles, guttural entertainment, me-me-me mentality, greed, lack of spiritual values, and lack of true patriotism.

Actually our form of government is a republic where we are ruled by law.

Unfortunately it appears that a democracy has taken over. A democracy is basically ruling by majority as our politicians and misinformed citizens believe. Why are we trying to spread democracy around the world?

A democracy will not work in a free society. Remember the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag - “and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God.”

It is time to return to declaring independence from big government. We need less government and more individual responsibility and with God's help we will have a better America.
