Letter: President Obama’s back to school address is Wednesday

September 27, 2011
Lehigh Acres Citizen

To The Editor:

The White House has informed school districts across the country that President Barack Obama will be delivering his annual "Back to School" address to students.

Lee County Public Schools is excited that the President of the United States will be delivering a school message for the 2011/12 school year and that we have the advanced notice so the District can plan accordingly.

The address is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, September 28.

As it has in the past, Lee County Public Schools will apply the procedures that are in place when it comes to any educational resource or material to be used/viewed by students in class. The advanced notice allows families to determine how they wish the speech to be disseminated for their child.

Teachers will have the opportunity to show the speech live in their classroom via the White House Web site (www.whitehouse.gov) or the District's TV99 station. In addition, the speech will be taped and made available to teachers who may not be able to show the speech live due to already scheduled classroom activities that cannot be interrupted (i.e. testing) but would like their students to view the speech in their class at a later date.

The procedures also provide parents with the choice of having their child "opt" out of watching the speech. In those cases the students will be provided educationally appropriate activities while the speech is broadcast.
