Top-seeded North Fort Myers claimed the District 5A-13 volleyball championship Thursday night with a 3-0 sweep of Lemon Bay in Englewood.
The Red Knights (19-4) advance to the regional quarterfinals of the state playoffs with the 25-18, 25-23, 26-24 nailbiting victory. As district champions, they will host District 5A-14 runner-up Estero Tuesday night.
Senior Jessica Wagner saved the Knights in game 3 after Lemon Bay made a come-from-behind bid to force a fourth game. Wagner made the match-winning point with her season-high 23rd kill of the night. She also served up three aces.
"We led game 3 by seven points all the way through to 22 points," said Knights coach Jeremy Ridgeo. "Then Lemon Bay made a charge, scoring point after point, all the way 22-20. They just would not go away."
At 24-24, Wagner rotated back to the front row and took charge. She rotated to the front row late in game 2 as well.
"She dominated tonight, as her stats show," said Ridgeo. "They had a chance to put us away, but when she rotated to the front row we kind of stole a win."
Miranda Ashby contributed five kills and seven digs to the Knights' cause. Setter Susie McKeever also had seven digs to go with 31 assists.
District 6A-13: Fort Myers reigns supreme with a 3-0 victory over second-seeded Riverdale in the championship game Thursday night.
District 3A-11: Top-seeded Evangelical Christian conquered Seacrest Academy in the championship game Thursday night, winning three straight 25-12, 25-19, 25-15.
