In a game rescheduled because of Friday's inclement weather, Fort Myers used a strong running game and tough defense to defeat Ida Baker 40-14 Saturday night at Edison Stadium.
The Green Wave came out quickly by scoring on their first two possessions, going up 13-0. It looked as if the Wave would run over the Bulldogs.
"We got off fast tonight." said Green Wave coach Sam Sirianni.
Baker got a spark from Justin Johnson after the Wave's second score. He ran back the kickoff 52 yards to the Fort Myers 25. A few moments later, Reece Atwood found Hunter Urraro on a critical fourth-down pass for 19 yards to the Green Wave 5. Two plays later, Jeremy Betts ran it into the end zone from the three.
Dalvin Battle scored three times for the Green Wave. His second score was a breakaway 33-yarder to put Fort Myers up 20-7 at the half. Battle's totals were 12 carries for 174 yards. The Green Wave amassed 330 yards on the ground compared to 141 for the Bulldogs.
The Green Wave scored three times in the third quarter, doing so quickly each time. The first came when Atwood's pass was high and intercepted by Charles Brown, who ran it back 61 yards for a score. That was Brown's second interception in as many possessions for the Bulldogs. The other came in three plays, with the big play being Battle's 45-yard run for the touchdown. The Bulldogs gave the ball right back to the Wave on a fumble at their own 22, and on the first play Quinton Smith fought off would-be tacklers and went 22 yards for the score.
Baker responded with one score in the quarter. Atwood hit Urraro again on a crossing route, and Urraro made his way through the Green Wave secondary 66 yards for the touchdown.
"It was an omen that we got to play on October 29," said Wave coach Sam Sirianni, Jr. "Last year, we got our school's 600th win on my Dad's birthday, and tonight we got to play again."
"When you play Fort Myers you have to execute better. We cannot make those mental mistakes and think that we can stay in the game," said Bulldogs coach Brian Conn. "We had a breakdown in communication in our no-huddle offense."
Both teams are still in the hunt for the playoffs, mathematically, as they conclude their regular season next week. The Wave hosts Bishop Verot, while the Vulldogs go to South Fort Myers.
