To The Editor:
My message is for Rep. Connie Mack. He should check with voters in Lehigh Acres and Fort Myers to see if they want a shutdown in Washington, D.C. They want jobs and food assistance.
He is so entrenched in his own opinions, he cannot see the trees for the forest. The forest being the Washington lobbyists and the trees being the voters. The past debt ceiling crisis showed to what lengths Mack is willing to go in disregarding the risks to this country and the economy.
I could wish for a Representative in the U.S. House that represented the demographics of this district, not one who is now egotistical enough to eye a Senate seat.
Let's discuss why his "penny plan" is not going to work. We do not need plans that hurt the recovery, which is very fragile. A penny on every dollar is a one percent reduction in government and military pensions that adds up to six percent at the end of six years. In dollars, our retirees will receive and spend more than $1,000 less than they would without this plan. It is even more egregious to cut Medicare spending. There it amounts to a 40 percent cut in services.
I look around Lehigh Acres and pray for relief in the form of jobs, jobs and more jobs.
