Ida Baker junior Anthony Myers did not represent his team in the State Class 2A Boys' Golf Finals as well as he had hoped, but as the school's first player ever to reach the state tournament he has much to look forward to next year.
"His goal is another trip next year," said Bulldogs coach Scott Conforte.
Myers finished in the bottom third of the 96-player field Wednesday at Mission Inn Resort & Club in Howey-in-the-Hills. He followed Tuesday's wind-blown, first-round 83 with a closing 87 for a two-day total of 170, tying for 75th.
"This was a big deal," said Conforte. "He had a great season. I can't complain. I'm very proud of him. It's harder to qualify for state as an individual. The practice round Monday was rained out, so we didn't get to see the course. Still, for 36 holes Myers followed his game plan to the end."
Led by Ramsey Touchberry's 7-over-par 151, Lakewood Ranch won the Class 2A team championship by six strokes (621) over Spruce Creek (627).
"That's good for our own Bulldog Invitational next year," said Conforte. "We can boast having the state champions."
Lee County's other soloist in the 2A field, Michael Adams of Estero, finished tied for 33rd at 160.
In the boys' Class 1A Finals at Deer Island Country Club in Tavares, Cape Coral's Jake Sherwin tied for 28th overall with a 36-hole total of 6-over 150 representing Evangelical Christian School.
Community School of Naples finished third in the team standings at 581, six strokes behind 1A champion Jacksonville Bolles (575) and second-place Plantation American Heritage (579).
Region 6A-4: Riverdale returned the favor in the regional quarterfinals Wednesday night by downing Barron Collier 25-20, 26-24, 20-25, 21-25, 15-12 to earn a rematch with Fort Myers in next week's regional semifinals.
Fort Myers, which bounced Gulf Coast 25-19, 25-21, 25-19, hosts Riverdale Tuesday night in a rematch of their District 6A-13 championship match.
Region 4A-3: Bishop Verot advanced to the regional semifinal round with a 25-10, 25-10, 25-12 quarterfinal round victory Wednesday over Cardinal Newman.
The Vikings host district rival LaBelle Tuesday night.
District 6 Tournament: Island Coast claimed both the boys' and girls' district titles Tuesday at Pin Street Lanes.
The Gators edged Ida Baker by less than 100 pins in the boys' event. Both teams advance to the state finals next week in Orlando.
Tim Sipper led the Gators to first place by rolling a 628 toward the team total of 2,884. Patrick Gray rolled a 580, Tyler Leclerc 570, Joseph Barch 568 and Michael Kruger 538.
Adam Causey rolled 654 toward the Bulldogs' total pinfall of 2,790. Taylor FRance rolled a 610, Eric Ryan 569, Alfred Casale 524 and Keith Nicely 441.
Steven Brewer (710) of North Fort Myers and Darren Hower (658) of Mariner advance individually.
Island Coast won the girls' title by a similar margin over South Fort Myers. Both advance to the state finals along with Cape Coral teammates Brittany Kawa (463) and Cyd Galang (434).
Jessica Davies led the Gators to a 2,135 pinfall with a score of 621. Jessica Leigh rolled 448, Lindsey Conn 425, Kirri Snyder 323 and Asianna Hotchkiss 318.
