A pair of goals separated by less than six minutes in the second half proved to be the difference, as the top-seeded FGCU women defeated fifth-seeded North Florida 2-1 Friday in the semifinals of the Atlantic Sun Tournament.
The Eagles advance to Sunday's championship game against sixth-seeded Mercer at 1 p.m.
FGCU freshman Shannen Wacker opened the scoring in the 50th minute, and senior Gina Petracco provided the game-winning goal at the 55:13 mark. Petracco, the A-Sun Scholar Athlete of the Year, also assisted on the game's first goal.
After a four-year Division I transition period, FGCU picked up the win in its first ever postseason match. The Eagles (13-4-2) play Mercer, which advanced earlier in the night by becoming the first No. 6 seed to advance to the A-Sun championship by knocking off East Tennessee State 1-0 in OT.
UNF, which defeated fourth-seeded Belmont in the quarterfinals, refused to go away pulling within 2-1 at the 80:09 mark on a goal from the right side of the box.
A-Sun Defensive Player of the Year Stephanie Powers earned her 41st career win in the net for the Eagles.
