Florida Highway Patrol Director Col. David Brierton recently promoted Terrence Gartner to major and tapped the new major to lead commercial vehicle enforcement operations throughout the southern half of the state, commanding the region that covers Orlando, Fort Myers, Palm Beach and Miami.
Gartner starte his career in September 1989 as a member of the Florida Department of Transportation's Office of Motor Carrier Compliance in West Palm Beach. He earned a promotion to sergeant in 1997 and was station in Miami. After four yera he achieved the rank of lieutenant in West Palm Beach. FDOT promoted Gartner to captain and assigned him to serve as regional commander over the West Palm Beach and Miami field offices, in 2005. He became a member of the Florida Highway Patrol in July this year, when the Office of Motor Carrier Compliance transitioned from FDOT to the patrol.
Gartner is a recent graduate of the Leadership in Police Organization Program, which the U.S. Military Academy and the International Association of Chiefs of Police developed. The course teaches participants theories and strategies to increase motivation, satisfaction and performance within their organizations and to support organizational change.
