Prep Report: Baker tops ELC in opener

Playing without 11 varsity players, the Ida Baker Bulldogs called up 10 JV players and beat East Lee County 3-2 Monday night in their regular-season opener at Bulldogs Stadium.

The 11 varsity players are suspended due to an incident that occurred last week during a preseason game at Cape Coral High. School and district administrators are investigating the incident to determine the players’ reinstatement.

Filander Barahana, Marlon Herrera and freshman Diego Sanchez scores one goal apiece for the Bulldogs. Sanchez is one of the JV players summoned to fill out the game roster. JV goalkeeper Alex Crispin made a number of saves against the Jaguars to preserve the victory.

The Bulldogs (1-0) host Cape High Tuesday night.

Mariner 4, Dunbar 0: Sophomore Lucas Orellana scored two goals as the Mariner Tritons made their season debut with a shutout victory at Dunbar.

Tim Thomas and Tyler Till each added one goal and freshman Austin Turner had one assist. Two goalkeepers combined to post the season’s first shutout. Jacob Olmstead made two saves in the first half and Alex Trujillo one save in the second half.

Turner and Josh Teeter controlled the midfield for the Tritons (1-0), who host East Lee County Wednesday.

Girls Soccer

Ida Baker 12, East Lee County 0: Monique Elliott scored six goals to lead Ida Baker to a one-half mercy-rule victory over East Lee County.

Elliott contributed two assists to match Amber Hutchinson. Hutchinson, Jordan Goffar, Shannon Pearl, Autumn Yesh, Ashleigh Weaver and Gabi Morales each contributed one goal.

The Bulldogs (2-0-1) play at Cape High Tuesday night.

Mariner 9, Dunbar 0: Mariner earned its first win of the season thanks to a mercy-rule shutout decision at Dunbar.

Marissa Villalon led the Tritons with three goals while Holly Fritz and Sam Kirby each scored twice. Nicole Romano and Alejandro Muro-Solis added one apiece, all in the first half. Muro-Solis also had three assists.

The Tritons (1-1-2) host North Fort Myers Tuesday night.

Evangelical Christian 8, Oasis 0: Goalkeeper Emma Nelson made 10 saves, but Oasis was handed a shutout defeat in its season-opening game at Jim Jeffers Park.

Joanna Rogers, Sam Gonzalez and Morgan Hutchinson made some breakaway runs for the Sharks, but could not capitalize on the scoring chances.

The Sharks (0-1) play at Canterbury Thursday.

Bishop Verot 2, Riverdale 2 (tie): Kady Otzko and Paige Law scored goals as Bishop Verot settled for a tie with Riverdale.

The Vikings outshot the Raiders 16-1 in the second half, but could not come up with the game-winning score.

Cailyn Rizzo made eight saves in the net for the Vikings (0-1-1), who host Evangelical Christian next Monday.
