Hole poked in story about Lehigh getting its fair share

GUEST COMMENTARY

By ADA M. THOMPSON , Lehigh Acres Citizen

In all the years I tracked the population of Lehigh Acres, Lee County officials played down my efforts and my figures, which I have well documented over 19 years and the only reason I could justify their refusal to accept the truth: appropriations to Lehigh Acres was based on population.

Keep the numbers down, we'll make money on these dudes.

According to an article in last week's editions of the Lehigh Acres Citizen and lehighacrescitizen.com, the headline read: Group: Lehigh gets fair share in tax monies.

Well, guess what.

It's all based on a population figure of 69,920.

The population of Lehigh Acres is actually well over 90,000 people and the United States Census Bureau has us at 86,784.

In 2007, I estimated our population at 86,000 - The Lee County economic Development Office, at 49,381; and the Lee County Department of Community Development at 59,000.

So you see, nothing has changed!

Are we really getting our fair share?
