Kendrec Ferrara poured in 31 points and grabbed 20 rebounds to propel Mariner to a 65-47 victory at Estero Monday night in the regular season opening game for both teams.

The Tritons raced to a 20-point lead at halftime.

"Anytime you can go on the road and get a win it's a good sign," said Tritons coach James Harris. "It's a very important win. People might say Estero is not very good, but they are a much improved team. We did a good job of getting up by 20 at the half and our guards did a good job of getting the ball inside to Kendrec."

Ferrara, who was 13-of-21 shooting, also blocked seven shots. Rick Moore added 15 points and seven rebounds for the Tritons (1-0), who don't play until next Tuesday at Lemon Bay.

Girls Basketball

Dunbar 45, Cape Coral 42: Cape Coral came up short against Dunbar, partly due to a 17-for-31 night at the free throw line by the Seahawks.

The win was a milestone for Dunbar coach Dwayne Donnell, who started his girls' basketball coaching career at Cape High. The win is the 300th of his career.

"The first win and the 300th win in the same building," said Donnell. "It didn't even dawn on me until I was talking to my brother on the phone last night, it being at Cape and all."

Donnell picked up just 22 wins at Cape before moving over the Mariner, where he added 104 wins before going to Dunbar for the last 174 wins.

"It's just a number to measure coaching by," Donnell said. "It also means I've been fortunate to have a lot of talented girls play in the program."

The Seahawks were led by McKenna Beach's 16 points with Kassie Griffin adding 10, including three three-pointers.

The Seahawks (2-1) host Riverdale Tuesday night.
