Ida Baker gals down Seacrest

The Ida Baker varsity girls basketball team upped its season record to 3-1 Friday with a 53-32 victory over Seacrest in the Celtics for a Cure Tournament at St. John Neumann in Naples.

Leading the Bulldogs were Jessey Placher with 15 points, Alicia Emmons with 12 and Hannah DelNegro with 11. Hurtado led Seacrest with 17.

Baker head coach Jason Briggs praised his team's play in the game saying the Bulldogs' press "got to them," and "It was a good game for us."

Baker returns to action today in the tournament, taking on host St. John Neumann at 12:30 p.m.

n Island Coast 43, St. John Neumann 42: Putting on a surge in the fourth quarter, the Island Coast varsity girls basketball team edged host St. John Neumann, 43-42, in the opening round of the Celtics for a Cure Tournament Friday evening.

Trailing 26-23 after three periods, the Gators rallied to outscore the host team 20-16 in the final quarter to earn the win, the teams third in six tries.

Leading the Island Coast team to the win was Patrice Mahone with 15 points. Contributing 11, including three three-pointers, was Leanne Ellis.

Gators head coach Jerry Ellis praised his young team's play. "Little by little we're figuring things out."

Bader led St. John Neumann with 15.

The Gators return to action in the tournament today at 3:30 p.m. against Seacrest.

In the two other games in the Celtics for a Cure Tournament, Golden Gate defeated Estero, 55-43, and Bishop Verot downed First Baptist, 51-36.

Boys Basketball

n Barron Collier 76, Ida Baker 65: Ida Baker's boys varsity basketball team fell to 0-2 on the early season, dropping a 76-65 decision to Barron Collier in the Island Coast Turkey Shootout.

Seth Woods poured in 14 points to lead the Bulldogs. Nathan Evans, Angel Inchausti and Price each chipped in with 8, while Jordan Lugo added 7. Eleven players in all scored points for the Bulldogs on the night.

Leading Barron Collier was Clark with 35.

The Bulldogs return to action today against Lely at 6:45 p.m.

n Gulf Coast 72, Island Coast 63: Despite a 20-point night from Robert Stark, the host Island Coast varsity boys basketball team dropped a 72-63 decision to Gulf Coast Friday night in the Island Coast Turkey Shootout.

While the Gators did hit 9 three-pointers in the game, an 8-19 night at the free throw line contributed to the downfall.

"We didn't play well offensively," Gators' head coach Greg Coleman said after the game, pointing out that his team likely didn't shoot 40 percent for the night from the field.

Backing Stark for the Gators, who stand 1-1 on the year, were Pablo Matos with 11 points, with Tim Dal Bon and Terrell Griffin contributing 9 each.

Leading Gulf Coast to the victory was Davidson Neptune with 25 points.

The Gators return to action in their tournament tonight against the Community School of Naples at 8:15.
