To The Editor:
Why would anyone in his or her right mind decide to dismantle the Environmental Protection Act of 1970? This was passed with bipartisan support under Richard M. Nixon, a Republican president.
Now the Radical Right is against the EPA. Why?
This bill was passed to ensure clean air and clean water. It was approved by the 100-member Senate with only seven dissenters. Today's U.S. House has proposed 160 bills and voted to take action to dismantle the EPA.
Benefiting from clean air and clean water is the public health. We prevent 17,000 premature deaths a year under the environmental law now- as long as polluters are held to account.
Currently the big issue under scrutiny and study is "fracking." This is a chemical injection into the soil to more easily extract natural gas. Both short-term and long-term studies are needed to see how these chemicals-which gas companies are not required to disclose to the public - affect pollution of our soil and groundwater. We see that this energy source is needed, but we must see just how safe fracking is.
Florida is perfect to help meet the nation's energy needs in a clean and safe way. Our state should be heavily investing in wind and solar - we are not rich in natural gas.
Please write to your U.S. congressman, Connie Mack (or call at 239-573-5837) and express your desire to keep Florida's air and water and soil free from pollution. State that you support the Environmental Protection Agency and would like the government to continue to maintain clean air and water, preserve the public health and prevent needless deaths for generations to come.
