Mariner too much for Cape

So many times in big rivalry games, the first break in momentum opens a gap that propels one team to victory.

That was the case Tuesday night when the Mariner Tritons pulled away from the Cape Coral Seahawks in the second quarter and closed the book on a 60-37 victory against their District 5A-13 and crosstown rivals.

"We survived their early energy," said Tritons coach James Harris. "They came out and hit a couple of threes and caught us on our heels a bit, but we were able to relax. The second quarter is evident of how good we can be defensively."

The Tritons went on a 23-3 tear in the second quarter to open a 35-14 halftime cushion and never looked back.

Senior Kendrec Ferrara led the Tritons with a game-high 23 points, 12 rebounds and six blocks. Rodney Hunter chipped in with 12, Tyler Bender 11 and Rick Moore 10 points.

Brandon Marshall topped the Seahawks with 13 points. The Seahawks only grabbed 12 rebounds the entire game.

Mariner (4-1, 3-0 district) hosts Riverdale Thursday while the Seahawks (4-3, 1-2) host Palmetto Ridge Thursday.
