Eagles split with Upstate
Florida Gulf Coast split a doubleheader against Atlantic Sun Conference rival South Carolina Upstate Monday night at Alico Arena.
Sophomore Sarah Hansen pitched in a game-high 23 points to lead the Eagle women to a 77-53 victory in the opening game. The result is the 300th career win for Eagles coach Karl Smesko.
Smesko is now 300-74 in 13 seasons as a head coach, 239-47 at FGCU.
No more than five points separated the men’s teams in the nightcap until late in the second half with Upstate prevailing 80-75.
Four Eagles reached double figures, led by freshmen Bernard Thompson (16 points) and Dante Holmes (15).
The FGCU women (7-1, 2-0) return to their home court Wednesday against Virginia Tech (3-7).
FGCU’s (3-7, 1-1) men host non-conference MAC foe Toledo Thursday night.
