After averaging 15.5 points and 5.5 rebounds over two games, FGCU freshman Bernard Thompson was selected as the Atlantic Sun Newcomer of the Week, the league office reported Tuesday.
Thompson is the second FGCU freshman to earn the accolade this season, joining point guard Brett Comer, who received the honor on Nov. 22. Prior Monday's game at Mercer, Thompson also was named the A-Sun Player of the Week by College Sports Madness.
Thompson began the seven-day stretch with 15 points and a season-high nine rebounds in the Eagles' 84-72 non-conference win over Maine on Dec. 29. At Mercer, Thompson hit double figures for a team-best 10th time this season, scoring a team-high 13 points.
With 10 starts in 13 games to his credit, Thompson leads all A-Sun freshmen in scoring at 11.8 points per game, ranking 10th overall. The 6-foot-3 guard's 25 steals are highlighted by 10 multi-steal efforts and a current streak of 11 games with a theft. Thompson is averaging 4.6 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game while shooting 44 percent from the floor.
FGCU wraps up a two-game A-Sun swing through Thompson's home state of Georgia at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Kennesaw State.
