New plans made in Lehigh for chess players

By Staff | Jan 11, 2012

To The Editor:

I wanted to say a belated thanks for the great article about our playing chess that appeared in The Citizen a few months ago.

I am changing the free chess lessons at Veterans Park Recreation Center to 6-8 p.m. Thursday evenings. I also open the Monday Community Chess Night at the East County Regional Library 4-8 p.m.

There will be a tournament at the Fiesta Golf and Party center on January 21. Registration opens at 8:30 a.m. Five rounds will be played for trophies. There is a $15 fee.

Groups of five can pay for four. The families can play golf for free. Contact me at 612-850-0244 or upliftchess@yahoo.com with questions.

We would like to make this a monthly event but that depends on interest. The Friends of the East County Library is sponsoring a free tournament Saturday, March 3. Doors will open at 9 a.m. Registration is available online or through the library information desk.

There will be trophies for scholastic divisions PK-3, 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12th grades. Adults compete for gift certificates. Thanks for helping me get word to area chess players.
