FGCU’s Eagles suffer program’s worst defeat

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A dominating first half performance on both ends of the floor set the tone Monday night as Belmont led from start to finish to rout FGCU 95-53.

The Bruins owned a 49-19 lead by the half en route to handing the Eagles (8-10, 4-4 A-Sun) their worst loss in program history.

The league’s defending regular season and tournament champion, Belmont (13-6, 6-1 A-Sun) put on an offensive clinic, shooting 55 percent (35-64) from the floor, making 14 three-pointers (14-31), assisting on 27-of-35 made baskets and holding a 40-22 edge on the glass that included 17 offensive caroms.

FGCU shot a season-low 38 percent (18-of-48) from the field. Freshman Filip Cvjeticanin was the only Eagle in double figures with 11 points. Freshman Bernard Thompson had seven points, a team-high seven rebounds and three steals.

The Eagles hit the halfway point of the A-Sun schedule Friday when they travel to Stetson for a 7 p.m. game.
