Snowbirds are slowly drifting back to Lehigh Acres and it signals the return of the Lehigh Art League artists, ready for another season of watercolor painting and fun in the sun.
The Lehigh Art League is known as the smallest art league in the Art Council of Southwest Florida, but one of the most active. The League was founded in 1968 and partnered with a theatre group; the "Friendship Forum" evolved "to bring a cultural and education center" to Lehigh Acres.
The theatre group disbanded but the art league is still going strong under the direction of prize-winning watercolor artist/ instructor Terry Shattuck. In keeping with our mandate, a yearly donation is made to the local high schools.

In addition to watercolor classes on Monday afternoons at the First Christian Church, 2803 Lee Boulevard in Lehigh, membership in the art league includes workshops, field trips and membership in the Art Council of Southwest Florida, affording members the opportunity to participate in art shows throughout Southwest Florida.
Dorothy Ault is the Delegate to the Council. Members are invited to monthly meetings - interesting programs and the opportunity to interact with members of other art leagues.
Two workshops are planned for this season.
Pauline Healey will be teaching watercolor "batik" painting, with the promise each student will return home with two finished paintings. Kevin Tobin will be presenting a workshop in advanced acrylics, a "Golden Artist Color Event."
Field trips this season will include Punta Gorda to view the 8th Biennial National Juried Show with Dean Mitchell, internationally-known Florida artist, as Juror. Plans are underway to attend the Edgar Degas "The Private Impressionist" show in Naples - these trips are close to home but past trips have included Boca Raton, Tampa Museum of Art, the Ringling Museum and, of course, the Dali Museum in St. Petersburg. Art, travel, and friendship create a close bonding agent in the Lehigh Art League.
The art league welcomes new members who have had some experience in watercolor painting.
