To the editor:
I previously wrote an opinion suggesting that citizens should get involved to stop the Medicaid cuts which are destroying Florida health care. You can get information at healfloridahealthcare.com or you can call 805-222-9801 or write Heal Florida Health Care, 306 E. College Ave., Tallahassee, FL 32301.
On March 6, 2012 the House and Senate budget negotiators agreed to chop $300 million out of Medicaid payments to hospitals and nursing homes. They are posed to dump another $150 million in disputed health care bills on county taxpayers.
It is disgraceful what our state legislators are doing with Medicaid overhaul. First, they are instituting cuts which are destructive and jeopardizes everyone's health care. Second, they refuse to act responsible and require insurance companies to spend a minimum amount on patient care (medical loss ratio).
The suggested federal amount was 85 percent. Instead, our law makers sought to require HMOs to share profits above 5 percent with the state.
They now reintroduce the medical loss ratio into another bill, and propose to allow insurers to comply with the ratio by contributing money to medical residency programs or to State Medicaid funds. Why not just ask for a kick back or a campaign contribution, from the funds that should go to patient care.
They also propose limiting home health visits and emergency room visits for Medicaid patients. Please tell me if we elected physicians or legislators to serve us. I suggest they might make house calls to verify the need for care. We must stop this government intrusion and destruction.
Please get involved and support Heal Florida Health Care Campaign. Remember we pay for the deficits caused by cuts. The people who do not get care pay by suffering and loss of life.
