The Cape Coral Hurricanes have announced the first 29 players that will be part of the overall 40 man squad for the 2012 Exhibition Season. The U23 Premier Men's Soccer team is based out of Cape Coral and will be playing their home games at Cape Coral High School during this spring and summer.
"We had two open tryouts and a tremendous amount of talented players that came to try out for the team," said J.P. Terrasi, the Hurricanes general manager. "We knew that there was some excellent talent here in Southwest Florida but we never expected to see the level of talent that was shown. We not only had top local talent show up but well experienced players from around the country and beyond. We even had a player fly in from Argentina for three days just to try out for the team."
Head Coach Mick Whitewood and his coaching staff had to narrow down over 100 players to an eventual 40 man squad. The full squad will then be broken down to a 26 man first team and a 14 man reserve squad.
"You will definitely notice many of these names as they are truly a 'who's who' in Southwest Florida high school soccer over the past few years," Whitewood said. "We have many of the top local high schools represented along with players that have some incredible international experience."
According to team officials, on this list there are players representing Cape Coral High School, Fort Myers High School, Ida Baker High School, Mariner High School, North Fort Myers High School, Bishop Verot High School, Evangelical Christian High School, Paul VI Catholic High School, Estero High School and LaBelle High School, among others. There are players that have played Division 1 college soccer including FGCU, Ave Maria and Webber University here in the state of Florida but others that played college soccer across the country and yet even others that have played internationally.
The players that have been named to the team thus far are: Nick Presti, Paolo Acosta, David Antunez, Matthew Brust, Juan Rincon, Harvey Rincon, Brendan Abernethy, Leo Caputo, Cody Allen, Andy Scott, Quade Marinell, Aldin Fazlic, Eldin Ramic, David Torres, Alassane Doukure, Derrick Hackett, Ryan Till, Gonzalo Torres, Martin Jijon, Jay Gilden, Matthew DeSanctis, David Butzke, Sean McKinney, Christopher Hamilton, Ivan Zigarevich, David Steeb, Chako Valazquez, and Damian Vincent.
As mentioned in previous news items, Terrasi has been working on this concept for almost two years now and is creating the team to play a full season of exhibition games this year in preparation to hopefully play in the United Soccer Leagues (USL) Premier Development League (PDL) next spring. The USL PDL is the premier men's U23 league in the United States. Terrasi will be applying for an official franchise later this year.
The team will start their season in May and will play into August of this year. They will play at least eight home games and 8-10 away games, some of which against actual USL PDL teams even though only on an exhibition basis.
"We're excited and honored to be playing against teams in the PDL as that will truly give us a measure of how good the team we have put together is," said Terrasi.
There will be more players announced within the week after a few more confirmations are made. The team is currently promoting their sponsorship, marketing and advertising opportunities where there are numerous ways to support the team.
Tickets and a full line of team merchandise will be available for sale soon. To find out more about the team and read more in depth player bio's on their website at www.CapeHurricanes.com. You can also follow the team on Facebook and Twitter.
