Donations to help young mothers returning to school in the fall

To the editor:

As you are aware, there are a lot of churches, organizations and charities that are distributing much needed school backpacks.

We need your help. Our project, Help Keep A Mom In School, supplys mothers with a back-to-school baby backpack.

For a donation of $20, we will fill a baby backpack with diapers, wipes, toys, bottles and blankets, and the moms will be able to choose their own baby clothes to fill the bag.

These moms are looking to re-enter school this fall after having a baby or caring for their older child and, in most cases, they have to leave the babies or children in child care or with a caregiver who needs baby supplies left with them for the day.

Diapers are not provided to these moms by Food Stamps, WIC, Medicaid or Medicare. A recent survey by Huggies found that one out of three mothers were not able to adequately provide diaper changes for their babies. We want to help offset these moms' expenses by supplying them with the baby supplies that they need.

As an incentive for moms to stay in school and focus on their work, each month that they have adequate attendance and grades, they will receive a voucher from their school to receive a package of diapers from us. We are registering these moms at this time and have already identified 163 moms who could use help with a back-to-school baby backpack.

The school administrators and guidance counselors are very excited about our involvement with these moms and their babies. This is an exciting new project that should help our moms to stay in school. One principal noted that this should help them to focus on their work and take a little edge off of their financial challenges.

Thank you for your help. This will make a difference to these local moms who will be going back to school with a baby at their side.

The baby backpacks cost close to $75. Your donation is $20 for each. Please consider several back packs. Just think, for $100 you will help five moms and their babies.

Donate online or mail a check to Destiny Diaper Bank, 11440 Metro Parkway, Fort Myers, FL 33966.
