Lee County Parks and Recreation baseball facilities recently finished hosting six consecutive weeks of amateur baseball tournaments at its sites with 342 teams that played 1,233 games.
The action continued this past weekend with the Southwest Florida Travel Ball at the Lee County Player Development Complex and Terry Park.
The two sites, as well as the Lee County Sports Complex, JetBlue Park and City of Palms Park, hosted:
- Amateur Athletic Union National Championships, July 23-29: 40 teams and 162 games.
- Perfect Game Baseball, June 30-July 20: 276 teams and 980 games.
- USA Baseball, June 18-30: 26 teams and 91 games.
The Perfect Game Baseball event also drew collegiate and pro scouts.
Summer's annual baseball events significantly impact Lee County's hotels and motels. Teams come from the lower 48 states, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic and Canada.
A report on baseball's economic impact during July will be available at the Friday, Aug. 10, meeting of the Lee County Tourist Development Council.
In 2011, amateur baseball events used Lee County stadiums for 218 days. Players, coaches and their families had a $48.8 million economic impact.
