A man who died after disappearing in the waters off Fort Myers Beach Sunday has been identified as Ronald E. Wilk, 48, of Lehigh Acres.
Wilk was found unconscious and not breathing on the beachfront behind DiamondHead Beach Resort shortly after being reported missing.
He was pronounced dead at 6:03 p.m. after resuscitation efforts by Lee County EMS paramedics were not successful, according to the incident report by the Lee County Sheriff's Office.
LCSO received two 911 calls relating to the incident. The first call was made in reference to an intoxicated male missing in the waters behind the Beach Pub. While deputies were en route, the sheriff's office received another call of a person who was found unconscious behind Diamondhead.
According to the report, a friend made the first 911 call and stated the deceased was drinking heavily before going into the water. She lost track of Wilk after he entered the surf and tried to locate him for 20 minutes and when she could not, called for assistance.
Ruben Ortiz stated he was the first to find Wilk unresponsive in the water behind 2000 Estero Blvd. Ortiz was walking the shoreline with his girlfriend and saw Wilk floating near the waterline, dragged him to shore, and sent someone to call 911.
The Medical Examiner's office has been notified. No other information has yet been released.
