Man found on top of his vehicle in Lehigh canal

September 12, 2012
Lehigh Acres Citizen

An Alva man and the vehicle he was driving ended up in a Lehigh Acres canal last week. The Florida Highway Patrol said the car had gone airborne at the end of a dead-end street.

They identified the man as Timothy James Matejkovic, 40, who had been traveling north on Williams Avenue approaching West 18th Street.

Investigators said Matejkovic continued on the posted dead-end street and after going into the grassy area at the dead-end, his vehicle went airborne and traveled over a canal, striking the downhill portion of an embankment with the vehicle's front end.

They said that after impact, the vehicle slid downhill and ended up under the water.

Later, Matejkovic was found sitting on the roof of his vehicle for an unknown amount of time.

Police said they also did not know if the crash occurred at the described crash scene or the previous night as told to police by Matejkovic, who is facing careless driving charges.
