A 12-year-old Lehigh Acres youth was struck by a car on Thursday, Sept. 13, at around 8:30 a.m. The incident occurred in the area of 68th St. West and Sunshine Blvd. North in Lehigh.
A spokesman with the Sheriff's office said they received a 911 call in reference to the incident.
Witnesses at the scene said the child was walking down a driveway and walked into the road without looking in both directions, according to the Sheriff's Office.
A 2004 Toyota Camry was traveling at a slow speed but was unable to avoid hitting the child who then rolled onto the hood and cracked the windshield, a public information spokesman with the Sheriff's Office said. The child had a head injury and road rash. He was conscious and alert when emergency responders arrived and was later treated and released for minor injuries at a local hospital.
The victim has been identified as Devon Royas, 12, of 68th Street West, Lehigh Acres. The driver has been identified as Marie Auguste, 40, of 66th Street, Lehigh Acres. She was not injured, officials said.
In a report to the media, traffic deputies had a reminder for parents: "Please make sure your children know how to contact you in case of an emergency."
