East County Regional Library announces October programs

The month's roster of activities for October at the East County Regional Library offers topics for all ages. The following activities are free to the public:

Adults

- Chess Anyone?

4 p.m. Oct. 22 and 29

Rise to the chess challenge and join the fun. Chess enthusiasts of all ages are welcome! Bring your own chess set or use one of ours. Sponsored by the Friends of the East County Regional Library.

- English Cafe

6 p.m. Oct. 22 and 29

10 a.m. Fridays, October 19, 26

Practice your English with English Cafe, a free, conversation session for adult ESOL and ESL students. Each 90-minute session provides adult learners an opportunity to practice speaking English with native speakers. Participants may start at any time. Advanced registration is not necessary.

- Naturalization Information Session

6 p.m. Oct. 17

Get answers to your naturalization questions in the library. Representatives from the U.S. Office of Citizenship and Immigration (USCIS) will offer information on the naturalization process. Registration is required.

- Poetry Room

6 p.m. Oct. 23

Poetry Lovers Unite! Join other like-minded people to talk about poetry and share what it means to you. Bring your favorite poem and listen to the poetry of others in a friendly, receptive environment. Registration is required.

Family

- Family Storytime

6:30 p.m. Oct. 30

This program is for the whole family and lasts about 30 minutes.

- Toddler Storytime

10 a.m. Oct. 31

Children 2 years old and their caregivers participate in song, fingerplays and short stories. The success of this age group depends on adult participation and encouragement. Toddler storytime lasts approximately 30 minutes.

Children

- Kids Read Down Fines

4:30-5:30 p.m. Oct. 24

Children and teens can earn a $2 coupon for every 15 minutes of reading, during the allotted time. A total of $8 per day may be earned. For ages 18 and younger. Coupons may be applied to cards issued to patrons age 18 and under only. Please bring your library card.

- R.E.A.D. to Dogs

9:30 a.m. Oct. 27

Independent readers can practice reading in a fun way! Maggie, our Reading Education Assistance Dog, will be on hand to listen to you read. She's a great listener! Kids of all ages are welcome. First-come, first-served.

- Preschool Storytime

10:30 a.m. Oct. 31

Preschoolers (ages 3 to 5) attend this storytime independently while parents or caregivers wait nearby in the library building. This storytime includes activities that require more participation and a longer attention span. Each preschool storytime lasts about 30 minutes. Registration is required.

Teens

- Chess Anyone?

- Game On! Board Games!

Calling all teens and tweens! Stop by the East County Regional Library and play a variety of board games at this relaxed and fun-for-all program. Just drop in! Snacks provided by the Friends of the East County Regional Library.

- Wii Play Wii Dance

4:30 p.m. Oct. 23

Visit the East County Regional Library and play your favorite Wii games and dance to your favorite songs. Game choice will vary from program to program. Sponsored by the Friends of the East County Regional Library.

Calling teen poetry lovers! You are invited to join other teens to talk about poetry. Bring a favorite poem or one you have penned and share it with others. Snacks provided by the Friends of the East County Regional Library.

- TeenReads Book Club: Neil Gaiman's "The Graveyard Book"

3 p.m. Oct. 31

It's Halloween and what better way to spend an hour than discussing a great ghost story. The TeenReads Book Club meets this month to share and discuss Neil Gaiman's "The Graveyard Book," the story of a young boy raised in a cemetery by ghosts, werewolves and other spooky residents. Snacks will be provided by the Friends of the East County Regional Library. Registration is required.

The East County Regional Library is at 881 Gunnery Road in Lehigh Acres.
