Local teachers win grant
Lehigh Acres Middle School teachers Carol Anderson, Dr. Teri Kilborn and Melissa Fiuza were awarded a $1,500 Foundation for Lee Schools Grant for the purpose of reviewing sixth- and seventh-grade benchmarks with hands on activities in science.
In addition, selected eighth-grade science students will go on a field trip to visit the Museum of Discovery and Science in Fort Lauderdale on Oct. 25.
Quest Academic Challenge in need of adult volunteers
Fort Myers Middle Academy, along with the Foundation for Lee County Public Schools, is hosting the Achievement Quest Academic Challenge for middle school students starting in December.
Similar to the very successful high school version - A-Team Challenge - the goal of Achievement Quest is to provide middle school students with an opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge of a wide range of subjects, promote life-long learning, celebrate academic achievement, enhance self-confidence and develop academic and social skills. The competitions are run much like the TV show, Jeopardy.
Middle school teams throughout the county will compete once a month against other schools located within their attendance sone.
To get the program off the ground, the district needs 12-15 volunteer judges - preferably retired educators living in the community - to serve as moderators, scorers, time keepers and judges for the events. The commitment will take about five hours once a month and would require each volunteer to travel to the designated school.
Anyone interested in assisting with the program can contact Bob Scallan at the Fort Myers Middle Academy at 936-1759 or e-mail email@example.com.
