Southern rockers .38 Special headline this weekend’s Coconut Festival

By Staff | Nov 10, 2012

Thousands turned out for the annual Coconut Festival kick-off Friday.

There are still two more days of coco-fun, to be had today and Sunday.

The event is at Sun Splash Family Waterpark, with local and national big

name bands, entertainment, carnival rides and games, food, contests, crafts,

and more.

Families reported lots of fun on opening night.

“I like all the color and excitement,” said Kelsey Miskimins, 11.

Kendall Miskiminis, her 9-year-old sister said “I like the CAT Country

music.”

“She’s liked country music since she was a baby,” said mom Erin Miskiminis.

“I enjoy the looks on their faces where we got in here.”

Tonight, the much anticipated appearance of the band 38 Special (of hit

“Hold On Loosely” fame) will take place, followed by fireworks. Local band

PUSH and The Atomic Punks and winners of last night’s “Coconut Idol” contest

for local youths will preceed the headliner.

“Coconut Idol will take place from 5 to 6 p.m., then PUSH will go on from

6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The Atomic Punks, a Van Halen Tribute Band, will appear

from 8 to 9, with the fireworks at 9, directly followed by 38 Special,” said

the Cape’s Special Events Coordinator Todd King. “My advice is to get here

early for the concerts because of parking; there are plenty of things to do

and places to sit.”

You can bring blankets and small camping chairs, but no coolers, he said.

He also noted opening night went smoothly.

“At events, that’s usually when all kinds of things come up, but this year

it went incredibly smoothly.”

There also will be performances by the Toa Tropical Polynesian Dance Team

and circus performers, in the circus-like atmosphere.

And don’t forget the food – what’s a festival without Funnel Cakes?

The cost is front gate – $5 per day, children under 5 years old free. Gate

includes concerts, venue shows and fireworks.

Sunday there is a buy one get one free for families admission. Ride wrist

bands are $25 and parking is free but limited.

Hours for the festival are Saturday, Nov. 10, from noon to midnight; and

Sunday, Nov. 11, from noon to 8 p.m.
