PHOTO SPECIAL TO THE CITIZEN
Lehigh Acres Middle School’s government and avid program participated in the ROPES course training. Participants were, row one, Amaya Jones, Tatiana Perry Coley, Amaya Esquillin, Jazz Thompson, Alan Cervantes and Nelson Ortiz; row two, Christina Espinoza, Mr. Chandler, Eduardo Salas Gomez, Nick Leftberg and Esther Bobo; and row three, William Gomez.
ROPES coordinator Gordon Chandler works with middle and high schools by arranging field trips to the SWFAS facility, where the students participate in a curriculum called, "Teaching Healthy Habits."
The course engages students by requiring them to physically participate in games and activities like the Human Chain and Blind Fold. The games teach the students how to communicate, develop a sense of trust and, ultimately, work together to achieve their goals.
The program was developed by using scientific evidence of how the brain works. It teaches youth how to engage in the thought process necessary to understand that choices and actions have a direct impact on the consequences or successes the students will encounter.
