Lehigh Community Services deserves credit

November 28, 2012

To the editor:

This has been an exciting five years for Lehigh Community Services. Many people In Lehigh Acres and our surrounding areas may not even be aware of its existence, or certainly about the scope of its services. This despite being the oldest and largest social service organization in East Lee County.

Founded 35 years ago, with the modest goal of providing assistance to this then small community, it has grown as Lehigh Acres has grown. It was initially housed in a small trailer and existed through the generosity of a few residents, local businesses and by a series of volunteer run fund raisers.

Today it fills modern quarters in a new building opposite the Microtel Inn & Suites. This facility was obtained through a federal grant that enabled LCS to move from more modest rooms and create a space that now includes a self served food pantry, private space for financial counseling , a literacy program and it has become the Lehigh Acres office of United Way. A conference room is available and frequently used by a number of other non-profit services.

Our current economic downturn has created tremendous pressure on LCS's resources. The community has generously participated in giving through three levels of charitable contributions: Cap Stone at $5,000; Keystone at $2,500 and Cornerstone, $1,000. In addition other donors are recognized through the Friends of LCS. Two fund-raising events are held annually, a Lobster Bake in March and a Golf Scramble the first week in December.

If you are interested in supporting Lehigh Community Services, visit our quarters on Plaza Drive or sign up for the Golf Scramble On Saturday, December 1, with tee off at 8 a.m. The fee is $60 per player and the event will be held at Westminster Golf Club, a beautiful course in a gated community.

Fliers are available for you to put together foursome, or you can join other players to be paired off. Sponsorship are available in a range from $500 down to $50. Your fee includes continental breakfast, lunch, prizes, a $10,000 hole-in-one chance and other fun generating events.

This is an enjoyable way to help a most worthy cause in an enjoyable fashion. For additional information, or to sign up call LCS at 369-5819.
