LCSO: Grow house goes up in flames

At 6 a.m. Tuesday, the Lee County Sheriff's Office received a call about a house fire at 4305 13th St. S.W.

The Lehigh Acres Fire Department responded to the home and found what was believed to be marijuana plants inside. LCSO deputies were dispatched to the scene, according to officials.

Detectives discovered 168 plants inside the home - an estimated street value of $336,000.

The State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause of the blaze.

Richard Lee Smegal Jr., 50, of 4305 13th St. S.W., was arrested and charged with cultivation of marijuana, felony possession of paraphernalia and trafficking marijuana.

The investigation continues and additional charges are pending, officials reported.
