Accident victim in critical condition

By Staff | Dec 26, 2012

A man remained hospitalized Wednesday after being ejected from a truck that he was driving when it hit a tree and burst into flames last week.

Wayne S. Moncrief was listed in critical at Lee Memorial Hospital.

At 11:59 p.m. Dec. 19, Cape Coral firefighters responded to the scene of a single-vehicle accident on Gleason Parkway, in which a truck had collided into a tree, Battalion Chief Christopher Moore reported. Two engines responded.

Upon their arrival, Moncrief had been ejected and the vehicle was on fire.

He was trauma-alerted to the hospital for his injuries.

Fire crews extinguished the vehicle fire.

Cape police reported last week that the truck left the roadway and struck some trees in a field. The driver was ejected as a result of the collision.

Witnesses said it appeared a police car was following the vehicle.

Police officials previously stated that the crash is under investigation.

According a witness, she was walking her dog at about 11:30 p.m. when a truck headed eastbound on Southwest 32nd Terrace sped by her and turned left onto Southwest 11th Court. A police officer was pursuing the vehicle.

Soon after, the woman observed the truck on fire in the 700 block of Gleason. The vehicle appeared to have hit some pine trees in the median.
