The Lee County Sheriff's Office Explorers took an opportunity to give back to the community and help families in need during the holiday season.
Explorer Post 18 participated in a two month-long programs supporting numerous organizations, communities and families.
During the holiday season, 20 of the Explorers conducted a food drive in which approximately 1.25 tons of food that was donated and collected from citizens in Lee County at local Wal-Mart stores. The donated goods collected were distributed to Harry Chapin Food Bank and the Pine Manor Community.
In addition, the Explorers conducted its 4th annual holiday "toy drive" outside of a local toy store where donations were accepted from the citizens of Lee County. The Explorers all participated in the toy drive by collecting and wrapping each and every gift.
The Post collected more than 500 donated toys and 12 bicycles. The distribution and delivery went to the All Children's Hospital, Lee Memorial Children's Hospital and to selected families in Lehigh Acres, Fort Myers and the Pine Manor Community.
Explorer Alex Ingram explained that being part of the holiday food and toy drive was "personally gratifying to know that all of our hard work and hours collecting donations was to help families who are less fortunate so they have a better holiday."
"Seeing the happy faces on the parents as they watched their children unwrap their toys made me feel proud to be an Explorer and part of a team that made this happen for them," Explorer Gustavo Marin said.
