Annual Taste of Pine Island kicks off Saturday

Two days of food and entertainment will be featured at Phillips Park this weekend during the annual Kiwanis Club of Greater Pine Island Taste of Pine Island.

The event will be held Saturday, Jan. 26, from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m., and Sunday, Jan. 27, from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Pre-sale two-day passes for the Taste of Pine Island are currently on sale for $8 at Capital Bank, Stonegate Bank, Ad&PrintCraft and the Greater Pine Island Chamber of Commerce. Tickets at the door are $5 per day.

This year, Whole Tones, Strange Arrangement, Kip and Trailer Park Barbie, Pine Island Steel and Pine Island Dance will provide the entertainment on Saturday and Sunday.

Some of the island restaurants that will take part of Taste of Pine Island include Waterfront Restaurant, Olde Fish House Marina, Barnhill’s Seafood Spot and Red’s Seafood House & Tavern.

A chowder cook-off will be held Saturday and a chili cook-off will be held Sunday, with the winners announced the same day.

The first place winner of the chowder cook-off will receive $500, second place will receive $75 and third place will receive $50. In the chili cook-off contest, the first place winner will receive $200, second place $75 and third place $50.

The Fish Drop will also be a part of the festivities on Sunday when a crane drops 3,000 plastic fish to the ground around 4 p.m. The first place winner will receive $2,000, second place winner will receive $500 and the third place winner will receive $250. Tickets are $5 a piece or five for $20.

Money raised during the event will help the youth of Pine Island.
