Celebrate Today's Woman open to public

The Celebrate Today's Woman lunch, sponsored by the Woman's Life Insurance Society, will be held from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Feb. 22 at the Hilton Garden Inn, at 12600 University Drive, Fort Myers.

It will focus on how Lee County business women can enhance their network and offers valuable information from three professionals: Linda Doggett, Lee County Clerk of Court; Ileana Sisson, licensed psychotherapist; and Terry Foster, health and nutritional counselor.

Enjoy lunch, visit business displays and network your business. Choice of lunch, goodie bags, raffle prizes and more.

Clock and watch exhibition scheduled

The Caloosa Chapter of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collections will host a free clock and watch exhibit will be held Feb. 23 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Lakes Regional Library.

Those who attend will have the opportunity to see many antique clocks and watches. Music boxes and unusual time keepers will also be included. Tools used in the trade will be on display.

Lehigh concert group to host free event

The Lehigh Acres Concert Association will host a concert Feb. 24 at 2 p.m. at the Fountain Crest Retirement Community. The concert is free and open to the public; donations will be accepted.

Participating will be Fountain Crest resident Ralph Boettger, well-known Lehigh tenor Ken Follett and Fort Myers Beach sopranos Alice Grawe and Tonya Reasoner. Jim Kreger, the music director at Faith Lutheran Church, will be on the grand piano.

Some of the music to be performed includes "Someone to Watch Over Me," "You Light Up my Life," "I love you Truly" and "Zaina Zaina, Zaina."

'Children in Crisis' focus of lecture

The "Wednesday Morning Live!" community lecture series will be held Feb. 27 at 10 a.m. at Covenant Presbyterian Church, at 2439 McGregor Blvd., Fort Myers. Free admission, with coffee and snacks at 9:30 a.m.

"Children in Crisis" will be presented by Raelyn Means, circuit director for the 20th Judicial Circuit Guardian ad Litem program. The program's mission is to represent the best interests of children who have been abused, abandoned and neglected.

47th Annual Competition for Young Artists set

The 47th Annual Competition for Young Artists for the Jillian Prescott Music Awards will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 2 at Florida Gulf Coast University's Bower School of Music, at 10501 FGCU Blvd. S., Fort Myers.

Sponsored by The Southwest Florida Symphony and Society, the competition is a scholarship opportunity for instrumental and vocalist students. It is open to keyboard, strings, woodwinds/brass, percussion and voice.

A special pre-competition continental breakfast will be held at 8:30 a.m. March 2. Cost is $5.

The competition is two-tiered - youth, ages 12-17, and young adult, ages 17-22. Prize money of $200 for youth and $400 for young adult will be awarded for future musical study. An overall winner in each category will get $500.

One first place winner will be awarded $1,800 and will perform with the Southwest Florida Symphony Orchestra during the 2013-14 season, with music to be mutually agreed by the conductor and winner. Other awards will be given to "up and coming" stars.

March in the Park to feature plants, art

The 5th annual March in the Park will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 9 at Jaycee Park in Cape Coral. Hosted by the Garden Club of Cape Coral, the plant and garden art sale is a fund-raising event.

Last year, more than 40 vendors were in attendance, selling all kinds of plants, from ground cover to palm trees, and garden art, from stepping stones to glass reflectors. Speakers, raffle drawings, food and music will also be available throughout the day.

Democratic Women's Club meeting planned

The Democratic Women's Club of Lee County will meet again at 10:30 a.m. March 9 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Fort Myers.

Lee County Community Band to perform

The Lee County Community Band will perform March 10 and April 7 at Cape Coral High School, at 2300 Santa Barbara Blvd. The events are free of charge, though donations are accepted.

Band members are musicians from all walks of life - career musicians, amateurs and folks renewing skills from years past - who reside in Lee, Collier, and Charlotte counties. The band rehearses from 7-9 p.m. Thursdays at St. Michael's Lutheran School in Fort Myers; new members are welcome.

Florida Native Plant Society announces speakers

The Coccoloba Chapter, Florida Native Plant Society meets at 7 p.m. at the Rutenberg Park Eco-Living Center in Fort Myers. Social time and information corner at 6:30 p.m. There is no fee to attend.

Speakers and topics will be:

- March 14: Doug Caldwell, of the Collier County Extension Office, on the non-native spiraling white fly and other bugs that may impact native plants.

General Woman's Club to award scholarships

The General Woman's Club of Lehigh Acres will award several $500 scholarships to single parents with minor children living at home.

Applicants must be a resident of Lehigh Acres and currently enrolled in continuing education classes at an accredited college, university or technical school.

There is no pre-printed application form. The guidelines are:

- Resident of Lehigh Acres: Send proof of residence, such as a utility bill or rent receipt.

- Provide street address and telephone number where you can be contacted; P.O Boxes will not be accepted.

- Single parent with minor children living at home.

- Name of college, university or technical school in which you are currently enrolled.

- Brief biography that includes your area of study.

Application must be received no later than April 20.

Mom's Morning Out program for families

Mom's Morning Out will be held May 10 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Alva Community Center, at 21471 N. River Road, Alva.

The program provides supervision for preschoolers ages 3-5 so mother can have a few hours to themselves. Participating children must be potty trained.

It includes inside games, play time, short movies, snack, playground, arts and crafts, and fun time with music.

Cost is $10 to register.

Farmer's Market set for Saturdays

A Farmer's Market will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays at the Majestic Golf Club, at 350 Homestead Rd. The market will offer fresh fruits and vegetables, crafts, music and food vendors.
