A Cape Coral man died Wednesday after his vehicle collided head-on with another vehicle that jumped the median on Hancock Bridge Parkway.

Mark A. Salyer, 57, of 607 S.E. 30th St., sustained fatal injuries in the crash, which took place at 7:01 a.m. in the 2100 block of Hancock Bridge.

According to Cape police, Salyer was driving a Honda mini-van west when an eastbound Hyundai Santa Fe jumped the raised cement median. The driver of the Hyundai also hit a sign before entering the westbound lanes.

Salyer was switching lanes to the inside lane after passing a commercial truck when the Hyundai hopped the median and the vehicles collided head-on. Francisca A. Espinel, 56, of 10 S.E. 14th Court, was driving the Hyundai.

Due to the impact, the Honda was forced off the road to the north.

The Hyundai then collided with the westbound commercial truck.

All three vehicles involved in the accident came to a rest.

Salyer was pronounced dead at the scene because of his injuries.

Espinel sustained serious bodily injury in the crash and was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital. She was listed in fair condition Friday afternoon.

The driver of the commercial truck, Floyd Simmons, 59, of 15271 Johnson St., Fort Myers, reportedly did not sustain any injuries in the accident.

According to police, neither drugs nor alcohol were a factor in the crash.

Salyer represents the Cape’s sixth traffic fatality this year.
