Middle school to offer Cambridge program
Lehigh Acres Middle School will offer Cambridge Secondary I program to qualified sixth-graders in the 2013-14 school year.
Research shows that students taking rigorous courses have better success in high school and college/university. It builds creative problem-solving skills, while allowing the student time to pursue personal interests.
The Cambridge program focuses on student-centered learning delivered through traditional academic and project based learning. Students develop communication skills in all facets: oral, listening and writing. Leadership skills are carefully built through coursework and experimental learning.
Incoming s ixth-graders and parents interested in the program can access an online application at the school's Web site at: lhm.leeschools.net, or by contacting Dr. Chevonese Anderson-Thomas or Assistant Principal for Curriculum Dr. Donna Schroll at (239) 369-6108.
Career Cruiser promotes career development
During National School Counselor's Week, Lehigh Acres Middle School counselors Eileen Cherbini and Carmelita Hampton visited eighth-grade social studies classes to cover career education.
The counselors are covering the Career Cruiser, a career exploration resource used to promote career development for students. It provides self-assessment activities to assist students in thinking about the relationship between personal interests and career goals.
The Career Cruiser publication can be accessed at: www.fldoe.org/workforce/publicat.asp.
New members sought for School Advisory Council
Lehigh Acres Middle School is looking to expand its School Advisory Council.
The SAC is an important group of parents, business people, community members and school staff who help determine the direction of the school.
Those interested in becoming a member of the council and have an interest in the governance of the school can attend a meeting.
The SAC meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. in the school's Media Center. Meetings are about 30 minutes.
The remaining meetings are:
- March 5
- April 2
- May 7
The SAC meetings precede the Parent Teacher Organization meetings. The PTO welcomes any parents to remain for its meetings that follow.
