At 5:18 p.m. Thursday, Cape Coral police responded to a serious injury crash in the 1500 block of Veterans Memorial Parkway West that involved two vehicles.

One vehicle was a black 2008 Hummer H2, driven by Jason Jones, 35, of 1102 N.W. 40th Place. Jones sustained minor injuries and was transported to the Cape Coral Hospital for further medical treatment.

Also in the Hummer was a 8-year-old boy, also of 1102 N.W. 40th Place. The boy also sustained minor injuries and was transported to the Cape Coral Hospital for further medical treatment.

The second vehicle was a white 1992 Toyota Previa van occupied by a man and a woman, who both died on scene due to the injuries that they sustained in the traffic crash.

As of Friday morning, police had not released the identities of the man and woman.

According to police, the Hummer was traveling westbound on Veterans in the outside lane prior to the crash, and the Toyota was headed eastbound on Veterans in its outside lane. For unknown reasons, the Hummer traveled off of the north edge of the road into the grass and continued for about 500 feet before impacting a row of shrubs.

After hitting the shrubs, the Hummer traveled back toward Veterans. It crossed over the westbound lanes, then across the grassy center median that separates the eastbound and westbound lanes of Veterans.

The Hummer crossed the eastbound lanes and struck the driver's door area of Toyota. The impact spun the Hummer and it came to rest upside down on its roof, south of Veterans in a grassy area.

After being hit by the Hummer, the Toyota flipped over onto its roof and came to rest.

The driver and the front right passenger in Toyota were pronounced dead on scene, police reported.

Jones and the boy were transported to the hospital.

A traffic homicide investigation is being conducted.

Officials reported Friday morning that it is unknown if the crash is alcohol or drug related.

The deaths represent the ninth and 10th traffic fatality for the city for 2013.
