Alleged robbery victim charged with selling drugs

By Staff | Mar 7, 2013

At 10 p.m. Sunday, William Douglas Adams reported to the Cape Coral police that he was walking through Big John’s parking lot when he was robbed by two people. He said his rent money was stolen, police reported.

However, detectives were familiar with Adams as he had been the target of an ongoing investigation. At the time of the alleged robbery, they had reportedly already bought cocaine from him and were building a case for a warrant.

On Wednesday night, detectives again purchased crack cocaine from Adams and he was arrested, police said. The investigation was expedited because Adams was preparing to move and a search warrant would not be possible.

Adams, 34, of 4826 Triton Court E., Apt. 3, was charged with sale of cocaine within 1,000 feet of a city park and possession of cocaine. He was taken to the Lee County Jail, where he remained Thursday without bond.

During an interview Wednesday with police, Adams reportedly admitted that he had not been robbed of his rent, that it instead was a drug dealer rip-off. He withdrew his desire to pursue any action on the alleged robbery.

“For someone to lie about being the victim of a violent crime and prey upon the sympathies of the public, all while knowing that it was a consequence (of) selling crack, is disgusting,” Lt. Tony Sizemore, the CCPD’s spokesman, said.
