Bond has been set for a Cape Coral man accused of trying to kill his wife by driving into their home while she was inside, then attacking her with a bat.

Jose Luis Acevedo, 41, of 303 S.W. 16th Terrace, was being held Thursday at the Lee County Jail on $350,000 bond, according to booking records.

He was booked Tuesday on aggravated assault with deadly weapon without intent to kill and homicide murder dangerous depraved without premeditation.

At 6:20 a.m., March 5, the Cape police were contacted by a man, later identified as Acevedo, who was crying. He stated that he was killing his wife. A relative of the couple also contacted police, saying Acevedo called and said the same.

According to a report, officers arrived at 303 S.W. 16th Terrace and found a Honda Odyssey van crashed into the rear exterior wall of the residence.

Inside the home were Acevedo and his wife, Yolima Papa-Sanchez, 45.

Papa-Sanchez had extensive injuries to her face and body and required immediate care. She was trauma-alerted to Lee Memorial Hospital.

During questioning, Acevedo allegedly stated that he and his wife had been arguing for three days and that he drove into the home’s wall, where he and his wife share a bedroom with their 7-year-old son. He then exited the van.

Acevedo allegedly entered his home through the garage and went to the entertainment center, where he grabbed an aluminum baseball bat. His wife then allegedly came at him and attempted to grab the bat away from him.

According to the report, Acevedo said he swung the bat and hit Papa-Sanchez in the arm. She pushed him away and went for the front door. He followed her outside and swung the bat again, hitting her in the head.

Acevedo reportedly told police that he “broke her head” and he saw stuff coming out of the back of her head. Papa-Sanchez allegedly began to cry and pleaded for Acevedo not to kill her, stating that she loved him and to stop.

He stopped and carried his wife back inside the home to the sofa. At that point, Acevedo called 911 and reported that he had killed his wife.

Acevedo reportedly said he went to the house with the intent to kill her.

According to the report, the couple’s son saw the entire incident.

The boy was not injured and remains in the care of relatives, police said.

Papa-Sanchez sustained injuries to her skull, a compound fracture to her forearm and multiple contusions, lacerations and defensive wounds.

Hospital officials could not report on her condition Thursday.

Acevedo has a court appearance scheduled for April 8.
