Health fair Saturday at Kings Way Christian Church

By Staff | Mar 12, 2013

A community health fair Saturday in Cape Coral will offer free wellness screenings in several areas and access to information and resources.

Lee Memorial Health System’s Parish Nurse Program has partnered with Right at Home In Home Care and Assistance and the Shell Point Retirement Community to provide a series of free health fairs to Southwest Florida.

“We have five health fairs for this season,” Nancy Roberts, parish nurse manager at LMHS, said Tuesday. “That’s when most people are down here.”

Saturday’s fair in the Cape is the third in the series. It will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at King’s Way Christian Church, at 2016 Kismet Parkway.

Roberts explained that parish nurses have held fairs for many years.

“This is the first year that we’ve consolidated the heath fairs, so three or four churches are coming together to serve a geographical area,” she said.

“It’s just a more effective use of resources,” Roberts said.

The first fair was held in Sanibel and the second was offered in Bonita Springs. The fourth fair will be held in Fort Myers and the last in the Cape.

“We’re going to be doing blood pressure and blood sugar,” she said. “There’ll be balance testing, for your balance – we’ll be doing body mass index.”

There will also be vision and hearing tests and memory screenings.

“They can pick and choose whichever free screening they want,” Roberts said.

Lifelife Screenings will also be available for stroke, vascular disease and osteoporosis. These will have a fee, and pre-registration is required.

To register for Lifelife Screenings, call (800) 324-9458.

“There’ll be lots of community resource tables that people can go up to and talk to,” she said. “Gather information about health and wellness issues.”

Door prizes and healthy snacks will also be provided.

According to Roberts, about 100 people have turned up for each fair.

“We’re expecting at least 100 at King’s Way or more,” she said. “We’ll see how many people from the community come.”

Organizers have been receiving positive feedback from the public.

“We’ve been able to identify some abnormal blood pressure, some abnormal blood sugars. We’ve been able to offer some referrals,” Roberts said.

“It’s just working out real well,” she said.

For seniors, information on advance directives, assisted living, brain health, injury prevention, in-home care, pharmaceuticals and more will be available.

For more information about the fair, call Roberts at (239) 343-5182.

“It’s a good opportunity to learn about themselves,” she said.

Those interested in parish, or faith community, nursing can also contact Roberts. A foundation course is scheduled for April 5-7 and 12-14.
